I picked accounting because the most successful founder in my hometown started there, and I assumed it was the surest lane to entrepreneurship. But once I’d earned my CPA and settled into a Big 6 audit room, I realized the profession felt worlds apart from building companies. Craving real innovation, I jumped to a tech company and landed in the CFO seat, where I had hoped to prep for an IPO but then steered the company through the dot-com crash. Still seeing finance sidelined, I created my own path: in 2004 I founded Acuity, one of the first fully remote firms to deliver client accounting services (CAS) for tech startups.

Two decades later—150 teammates, thousands of clients, and a merger with 14 peer firms—I stepped away from day-to-day leadership. Today I invest in early-stage accounting tech, advise platform builders, and share lessons from 30 years of accounting leadership and entrepreneurial experiments.
